It was. Films like Grease, American Graffiti and That’ll be The Day were huge. Even bigger was Happy Days on TV. There were more teds in the 70s than there were in the 50s and no matter what revisionist documentaries try to tell you, in the 70s you’d see far more teds than punks. The nostalgia was accelerated by the death of Elvis. After years of white-suited Vegas naffness, people suddenly remembered that he was the greatest rock idol of all time. Groups like Showaddywaddy, Darts and Mud were having hits in the 70s with records that harked back to the 50s. Their records, let’s be honest, weren’t great but this 50s-influenced 70s gem remains superb.
