When Timmy Thomas’s original first hit the charts, there was a bit of strife in our family. My eldest sister had gone off to live with her boyfriend, without getting married first. Seems ridiculous now but in 1973, this was seen as the depth of bohemian depravity. In the heated discussions that preceded her departure, my sister had often said “Why can’t we live together?” so that was what I thought Timmy was singing about. But he was looking at a much bigger picture. Here’s that ’73 original re-mixed by Carl “Three Decks” Cox, featuring backing vocals by Winston Churchill and Martin Luther King. With Donald Trump about to be inaugurated as US President, never were its sentiments more poignant than today.
I didn’t realise what this song was about.
