Chelsea have already won the Premier League title and the League Cup, so this season London teams have won all three domestic competitions. This never used to happen. The North West was always the powerhouse of English football. But Manchester United, like Liverpool before them, are nothing like the force they once were. And despite spending billions in the last few years, Manchester City haven’t been as triumphant as they’d hoped. The growing success of London football teams (except QPR) seems to be yet another example of London leaving the rest of the country behind. It’s now a truly global city, attracting the finest talent from all over the world. Including footballers. I once did a TV commercial with David Ginola and asked him why he’d moved to Tottenham from Newcastle, a far bigger club where he was absolutely worshipped. “Simple”, he said, “I wanted to work in London”.
Arsenal win the FA Cup.
