Auntie Jean – the grand old lady of Greek Street.

Back in the 80s, she ran Groove Records in Soho and a more unlikely soul and hip-hop aficionado would be hard to imagine. She was about sixty and would often put down her knitting to serve customers, yet there was nothing she didn’t know about the latest US dance imports. Groove Records was a tiny shop, usually crammed with club DJs, desperate to be first to get whatever had just arrived from the States. I remember interrupting her knitting to get this. Like most independent record shops, Groove Records is long gone. But today is Record Store Day and if you’re lucky enough to still have one near you, get out and support it. Feel the enthusiasm of the proprietor and the joy of having a real piece of music to take home. Otherwise the title of this track could be sadly appropriate.
