Because apparently, we’ve fallen out of love with DIY. Not before time. Some of us never fell in love with it in the first place. Along with drinking tea and wearing slippers, “It Myself” is something I’ll never do. And for good reason. Speak to builders and they’ll tell you that much of their jobs involve un-bodging some tight-fisted amateur’s attempt to deny work to professional tradesmen. B&Q are now closing sixty stores. And while nobody likes to see job losses on this scale, good riddance to these horrible places. Our obsession with buying property and “improving” it has led to us becoming the most mortgaged society in the world. And with such a slew of DIY enthusiasts, one of the most boring. Maybe that’s about to change. Maybe I’m ahead of the curve. Because even if I did have a hammer, I certainly wouldn’t use it.
This Bank Holiday, B&Q won’t be so busy.
