I’ve always loved the Brummies. To me, they’re the most English of English people – situated, as they are in the heart of this sceptred isle. I was up there today and I loved it. A thriving, diverse and vibrant city – a million miles from the much-maligned Birmingham of old: the Bullring, British Leyland and Benny from Crossroads. I found some great bars, good shops and a magnificent new library. But one thing hasn’t changed and that’s the warmth and friendliness of the people. And as for music of this fine city – we could go for Black Sabbath, ELO, UB40 or Led Zeppelin but no. Nothing captures Birmingham quite like this half-forgotten gem.
Birmingham.
