Remember the great Millennium Bug scare of 1999? As the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Eve, we were told, a virus known as the Y2K bug would cause untold damage all the computers on the planet and global catastrophe would ensue. Billions of pounds were spent to combat this Armageddon but in the event, nothing happened. And it wasn’t because of those billions spent. Many countries, including South Korea and Italy, spent absolutely nothing and their computer systems remained intact. As the European Referendum approaches, we are again being threatened with catastrophe if we vote to leave. I’m not saying we should, but I can’t help feeling that the Remain camp’s prophets of doom might be the same people who predicted worldwide disaster in the year 2000.
It’s all gone a bit Y2K.
