…can be inexplicable. I remember an American writer saying to me, “But you guys don’t even have weather”. In the US they suffer real extremes of hot and cold, as well as have hurricanes, floods and earthquakes. How they must laugh every time they see the UK brought to a standstill by a light flurry of snow. Much can be blamed on Michael Fish failing to predict a genuine hurricane back in 1987. Ever since then, weather forecasts have erred on the side of doom. Far better to predict the worst then if it isn’t that bad, nobody really minds. The Met Office has gone into apocalypse mode again – this time about Hurricane Bertha – though its effects have been relatively mild. So from now on, when the outlook is a bit gloomy, all weather forecasters should be compelled to sing this.
