I don’t want to tempt fate but Desmond Carrington will be 90 this year and still hosts “The Music Goes Round” every Friday on Radio 2. He can’t go on forever but the show is hugely popular and not just with the elderly. It has a sizeable cult following among those not yet carrying a bus pass. My friend Brian Jenkins and I keep talking about visiting the pub in Suffolk where the regulars gather at 7pm sharp to listen to Desmond there. His eclectic selection leans towards the antediluvian but always contains the odd (in both senses of the word) gem. Best of all, this urbane fellow can be surprisingly waspish about other performers. I worked with Zoe Ball last year and she told me that Norm is another huge fan. So this track may well have been influenced by Desmond Carrington.
Catch him while you can.
