My friend Brian – whose wife is Swedish – first introduced me to Fat Tuesday, the Swedish equivalent of Shrove Tuesday. Instead of thin, unappealing pancakes our Scandinavian friends prefer big sugar-topped, wickedly creamy cakes known as semlor buns. Perfect for indulging yourself before the forty self-denying days of lent. If the scrumptious display at the Scandinavian Kitchen in Great Titchfield Street is anything to go by, we Britons are now starting to adopt Fat Tuesday in the same way we adopted Abba, Ikea and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. I’ve just adopted a couple of semlor buns. Slightly hypocritical though because the one tradition I’ve never adopted is Lent.
I think it’s catching on.
