It was a few years ago. I was meeting my old friend Bill Overton and he turned up with Tony Blackburn, who struck me as a thoroughly decent and honest man. Almost too honest. In the 1970s, he famously begged his wife, on air, not to leave him. And told striking miners to go back to work. But over the years, he grafted his way back to a national prominence on Radio 2. Yesterday the BBC sacked him for contradicting their version of events regarding the Jimmy Savile enquiry. Big mistake. Tony Blackburn is almost childlike in his candour and will not shut up until his reputation is restored. That afternoon, he told us that “One day it will all come out” about Jimmy Savile and that the BBC would try to cover it up. I’ve got a feeling that Tony Blackburn may be the person who finally reveals the truth.
Coffee with Tony Blackburn.
