Of course…….but maybe…..

The comedian Louis CK does a great routine in which he presents a point of view with which it would seem wrong to disagree: “Of course…..” then presents the opposing view, saying things we’re not even supposed to think: “But maybe….” So I wonder what he’d have made of the firemen protesting outside Clerkenwell Fire Station against its threatened closure. “Of course all firefighters are heroes and of course no fire station should ever close down……….but maybe we don’t smoke or use chip pans like we used to. Maybe all curtains and sofas are now flame-retardant. Maybe we just have fewer fires, so we need fewer people to put them out”. Still not sure if I think “Of course….” or “But maybe….” though it’s a good excuse to play this.
