Waterford crystal. Heavy, beautiful and the perfect receptacle for a spectacular trifle. It was a wedding present from Caroline Aherne, who died today after a long battle with cancer. Back in the 90s, I knew her really well. I worked with her and Craig Cash on a series of TV ads for British Gas. We got on famously and just laughed constantly. Caroline was a comic genius and in one sense, was completely unaffected by fame – always remaining totally natural and down to earth. In another sense, she was terribly affected by it – her fragile personality struggled to cope. On my wedding day, she came to the registry office but was too shy to come to the reception. She just gave me that crystal bowl and left. Tomorrow’s my birthday but I’ve decided I’m not having a cake; I’m having a trifle.
Just looking at a crystal bowl.
