I have nothing against the long-serving presenter of Woman’s Hour. I’ve been on Woman’s Hour and she was very nice. Though, I have to say, not overburdened with broadcasting brilliance. Which is why I was astonished to discover that Jenni Murray was made a Dame in 2011. For what? Maybe the honour was for some selfless and laudable charity work but no, it was for “Services to Broadcasting”. I heard her last Sunday morning doing the Radio 4 paper review. The other guests were discussing a big story that reflected rather badly on the BBC. Instead of giving her opinion, Dame Jenni gave a smug chuckle and said she couldn’t possibly “bite the hand that feeds me”. If that cowardly, self-serving attitude is an example of Jenni Murray’s “Services to Broadcasting”, I’d like to see her damehood revoked. Anyway, to music fans, there’s only one person worthy of being called “The Dame”.
