Hard to imagine but he’s 65 today. I don’t think any solo performer has ever caused more teenage hysteria than David Cassidy. Thousands of girls besieged Heathrow Airport when he first arrived in 1972. When he appeared at White City Stadium, the stampede to get to the stage was so bad that more than 600 fans were injured and one girl died of a heart attack. My sister was there and so too was a PA I worked with who always said she was David Cassidy’s biggest fan. Many years later, he came to London to star in a West End musical. I’d written an ad campaign for an American beer and needed a US actor for the voiceover. Saying nothing, I somehow forced this PA to come along to the recording. As you can imagine, she nearly fainted when guess who walked through the door.
