RIP Billy Paul. He died last week, aged 81, but with the media frenzy surrounding Prince’s death, Billy’s passing went largely unnoticed. He was Philly’s answer to Marvin Gaye and one of the greatest soul singers of all time. He’s most famous for Me & Mrs. Jones but I’ve always loved his version of this. He turned a bland Wings hit and into a joyous plea for racial tolerance. I was a big fan and actually, if I were asked to part with either my CD of Prince’s Greatest Hits or my old vinyl copy of The Best of Billy Paul, it’d be Prince who’d end up down the charity shop.
A death you may have missed.
