The lovely June Whitfield died a few days ago, aged 93. She was one of a shrinking number of UK celebrities who have been continuously famous since the 1960s. They’ve never retired and are still very much in the public eye. They are as follows: The Rolling Stones, Michael Caine, Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey, Alan Bennett, Harry Redknapp, Barbara Windsor, Michael Parkinson, Lulu, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Tony Blackburn, Johnnie Walker, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, Van Morrison, Ray Davies, Maggie Smith, John Cleese, Michael Palin and Twiggy. Though two stand out from the others: Harry Webb and William Roache, better known as Cliff Richard and Ken Barlow. Neither particularly talented and yet both have enjoyed careers far longer than either could ever have imagined. Ken Barlow was one of the characters in the very first episode of Coronation Street 58 years ago. When Cliff was No.1 with this.
