Jose Mourinho is the most successful manager in Chelsea’s history. But yesterday they sacked him for the second time. On this occasion, just seven months after he’d led them to the Premier League title. It’s true that the collapse in their form has been startling. Chelsea have gone from champions to relegation contenders almost overnight. Something is clearly very wrong. Rumours around Stamford Bridge speak of “bad apples” – overpaid stars who have ruined both the dressing room spirit and the team’s performances. In the January transfer window, Mourinho would have shipped them out, replaced them and re-invigorated his side. But despite everything he’s done for them, he will not be given that chance. So this morning I imagine every top football manager in Europe will be singing this song.
