Tomorrow we celebrate the birthdays of both Celine Dion and Jessie J but I think it has to be today to honour the 70th birthday of Diana Ross, the diva’s diva. Her ‘journey” has all the classic elements – raised in the slums of Detroit but with a fragile beauty and sweet, pure voice that belied the ruthless determination that helped make her one of the biggest stars in the world. However, around 1980, her career was on the floor. She hadn’t had a hit in years when someone at Motown made her record this, written and produced by Nile Rodgers. It has perhaps the greatest bassline ever but by all accounts, she hated it. And in true diva style, did not shy away from letting everybody know. Though I imagine, when Nile’s signature bassline re-established her as a global superstar, she quickly changed her mind.
