…is that he went to Studio 54. In 1978, Disco Donald, like the legendary nightclub he frequented, was regarded as the very model of New York liberalism. Many years later, this was still the case. In Sex & The City, Samantha described Big as “the new Donald Trump”, as though no higher compliment could be paid. I cling to the impossible hope that, beneath Trump’s monstrous orange-faced persona, there beats the heart of a Manhattan sophisticate. And today, as critics denounce his first 100 days in office as the worst of any president in living memory, there’s one way he could turn them all round. In front of the TV cameras, he could bust a few moves to this Studio 54 favourite. And as a tribute to the late Sylvester, do it in drag.
