Britain was battered today but the rather comically named Storm Doris. For many parts of the country, the 90mph winds were no laughing matter. Road closures, widespread cancellations of trains and flights, falling trees and debris. In London we were, as usual, spared the worst of British winter weather though, I must admit I did find it a bit gusty as I walked up Tottenham Court Road. We were grateful that our journeys take place deep underground where the tubes were largely unaffected by Doris. Our colleagues who commute in from distant suburbs and satellite towns weren’t quite so fortunate. Thousands were stranded at mainline stations. Unable to get home, all they could do was shrug their shoulders and say “Whatever will be will be”.
