I went to a party there on Saturday at what’s now the Richmond Boat Club. I sort of knew where it was – in the middle of the Thames near Twickenham – but I’d never actually been there. In the 60s, Eel Pie Island had the one of the most famous jazz and blues clubs in the country, where bands like The Stones and The Yardbirds played a lot of their early gigs. The Yardbirds with a young Eric Clapton on lead guitar would no doubt have played this R&B standard which was their first minor hit. Fantastic record but you never hear it on the radio anymore. Can’t imagine why.
