She hasn’t died and it isn’t her birthday but Evelyn “Champagne” King was a great example of the nonsensical nickname. Another was an American DJ called Boom Boom Brannigan and my all time favourite: a heavyweight boxer called Carl “The Truth” Williams. His contemporaries included “Iron” Mike Tyson and James “Bonecrusher” Smith. Those nicknames I can understand but Carl “The Truth” Williams? What on earth was that all about? Ms.King re-emerged a few years after this hit to have an even bigger one with “Love Come Down” but she’d quietly dropped the nonsensical nickname and was plain Evelyn King. Which I’ve always thought was a…..shame.
