Because it’s so easy. That’s the sneering refrain from old-skool spinners, including me, who plied their trade when it was hard. When the latest tunes had to be sought and bought on 12″ vinyl and lugged to gigs in heavy crates. All you need now is a laptop, an amp and a pair of speakers. Which is exactly what I had yesterday at a barbecue at a big house in Essex, where my wife had kindly volunteered me to do the music. And it really was easy. I just plugged in to Spotify and played for hours. Well, that bit was easy. You still need the knowledge. You can’t just go in and play your “set”. You have know about music and people to create the right vibe. You have to know that at a sunny barbecue in Essex, this is going to sound fantastic.
Everyone’s a DJ now.
