Tonight against Manchester United, West Ham play their last ever game at the famous old ground. Back in the 90s, I had a memorable trip to see that very fixture at that very ground. At the time, I was friendly with a photographers’ agent called Denise Chapman whose brother Lee was playing up front for West Ham. Lee Chapman was married to Leslie Ash so I went along with Denise, Leslie and a few other people. I was sitting right next to Leslie Ash when thousands of United fans started singing about Eric Cantona, and I don’t think I’ve ever been so embarrassed-by-proxy: “He’s French, he’s flash, he’s shagging Leslie Ash – Cantona!”. So we have to play a track featuring Phil Daniels who, in Quadrophenia, did just that.
Farewell to Upton Park.
