The people of London are being blamed for powering the UK’s economic recovery. It’s not fair, apparently, that those in London who work so hard to earn money for the rest of the country are seeing their city surge way ahead of everywhere else. Even worse, cry those in other regions, the vibrant, creative and industrious character of London is drawing all their best people away. It never occurs to them to stem the exodus by raising their own game, which is why most “Londoners” began life elsewhere. But let’s salute those who didn’t. If you grow up in London where competition for everything is so much tougher, you have to try even harder to stand out. And that’s certainly true of Brixton’s own David Jones. One of my favourite jaunts last year was to see the Bowie exhibition at the V&A. It’s one of the world’s truly great cultural institutions. And guess which city it’s in.
So it’s our fault, is it?
