We were recording a campaign of radio commercials and this man was the client. He had a reputation as a bully who always wanted his own way. Having agreed everything, he’d apparently then change his mind once the work was finished and refuse to sign it off. But somehow we got talking about Guilty Pleasures, those uncool records that you inexplicably love. He explained that he was brought up during The Troubles. He was a Catholic from the Falls Road and had fallen in love with a Protestant girl from the Shankill Road. Their relationship was doomed from the start but, more than thirty years later, he still missed her and this record always reminded him of a love that could never be. He was welling up as he told us. After that, he was really nice and signed everything off with a misty-eyed smile.
He was a fearsome brute from Belfast.
