It was fifty years ago today.

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the release of Sgt. Pepper, the most celebrated and influential album of all time. The BBC have gone completely overboard with radio and TV documentaries. Predictably, they’re using the Scousiest of Scouse accents for the trailers and we’re also being told how “the people of Liverpool” will be celebrating this landmark occasion. Just a minute: What the hell has Sgt. Pepper got to do with “the people of Liverpool”? Yes of course, The Beatles were all born there but only achieved fame and fortune by moving away. They were extravagantly talented but extremely fortunate to work with George Martin (from London) at Abbey Road studios (in London). Had they remained in Liverpool, The Beatles would never have made Sgt. Pepper. And Paul McCartney would have ended up like his brother, making records like this.
