For my great friend Mairead Carty’s 50th birthday party. She’s a wonderful actress and voice artist whose sublime tones have made commercials I’ve written sound far better than they had any right to sound. With her rosy Irish cheeks and hair as black as Guinness, it’s hard to believe she’s 40, let alone 50. The only clue is her passion for and knowledge of 1970s pop songs. Songs that others may have forgotten but she’ll know every word. This would be a perfect example. The party is in a room above the pub in Notting Hill that her mother used to run, and where Mairead would have lived when this was a minor hit. And it’s where I’m sure we’re going to find a picture in the attic.
To Finch’s in Portobello Road.
