I’ve known Majella Lewis and admired her sassy creative talent for practically all my working life. I saw Madge (as she’s known) for caffeine last week and she mentioned that her daughter was part of a dance troupe performing at the Arts Depot in North London. They’d be dancing to this underrated but hugely influential track. Very influential as far as Madonna was concerned. It hit the charts three years before she did and is so obviously the template for all her early hits. Stacy Lattisaw was just 13 when she made it but Madonna, rather embarrassingly, is still hawking herself about at 58. That particular Madge is well past her creative peak. Whereas the Madge I saw last week is only just hitting hers.
It was my friend Majella who drew my attention to it.
