I’m talking about Lily Allen, who was on Desert Island Discs this morning. I always knew she was more refined in real life than she pretends to be on record but I hadn’t realised just how “mock” her mockney accent was. Why do so many middle-class people do this? Not content with being privileged, they then try to co-opt the identities of those less fortunate than themselves. This was the first record she chose but she seemed totally unaware of the irony. She is exactly the girl Jarvis is describing, the very target of his invective. She hasn’t a clue what it’s like to live in poverty on a rough estate where, in one of the truest lines ever committed to vinyl, people “dance and drink and screw because there’s nothing else to do”.
My God, isn’t she posh?
