Don’t worry, he hasn’t died. He was alive and well yesterday when I saw him at a lunch at the Savoy at which he was inducted in the Radio Academy’s Hall of Fame. Barry Cryer is famously funny, famously nice and yesterday was the first time I’d ever met him. I told him that I’d always been a huge fan. “Oh’, he said, “So you’re the one”. Doesn’t look funny on the page, does it, but it was. And that’s what sets him apart – perfect delivery and exquisite timing. If you were to relate a funny story that he’d told you, it wouldn’t be as funny because you wouldn’t tell it like Barry Cryer. Same with this song. Yes, you know it. Yes, you can sing it but if you’re never going to sing it like Stevie Wonder.
