Happy Birthday to Paul Weller, 58 today. The Jam were good. The Style Council were great. I even liked some of his solo stuff back in the 90s – especially The Changingman, heavily “influenced” by this early ELO hit. But still he goes on. And on. Churning out album after album, each one quite indistinguishable from the last. His solo work has been described as the musical equivalent of rump steak – meaty, hard to swallow, rather unsatisfying but nonetheless “real”. Who buys these albums? I suspect it’s a hardcore faction of blokes in their forties and fifties who support Paul Weller in the same way as they support Chelsea or Spurs. God, if only they’d stop then he might too.
Great that he’s still going. Or is it?
