Well, obviously not John Lennon. I found myself at the Brixton Academy for the NME Awards watching a bunch of bands I’d never heard of collecting gongs for music I’d never heard. But I had heard of the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award – ladies and gentlemen, Yoko Ono. And up she tottered, tiny and talentless as ever. At first I thought she’d been brought to trial like some elderly war criminal, charged with destroying the greatest band in the world. But no such luck. 35 years after his death, she’s still been awarded and rewarded for her association with John Lennon. And I couldn’t make up my mind what was more tragic – his career lasting only eighteen years or hers still going after the best part of fifty.
Guess who I saw last night?
