Arsenal needed to beat the mighty Liverpool at Anfield by two clear goals. It was 1-0 with just seconds to go when Michael Thomas scored Arsenal’s most celebrated goal ever. Back then, there wasn’t much for love for Liverpool. It was partly envy because, for a decade, they’d boasted the best football team in the world. But it was more than that – we loathed their inability to laugh at themselves. That fabled Scouse humour didn’t extend to jokes made at their expense. So when they lost so cruelly, a nation rejoiced. I met my mate Dave Bell, a mad Evertonian delirious with joy, at Highbury Corner to join a massive spontaneous party where thousands of people really were dancing in the streets.
