The First Division title decided with the last kick in the last second of the last game of the season. Yet 26 years ago tonight, that’s exactly what happened. Arsenal needed to beat the mighty Liverpool at Anfield by two clear goals. It was 1-0 with just seconds to go when Michael Thomas scored Arsenal’s most celebrated goal ever. Back then, there wasn’t much for love for Liverpool. It was partly envy because, for a decade, they’d boasted the best football team in the world. But it was more than that – we loathed their inability to laugh at themselves. That fabled Scouse humour didn’t extend to jokes made at their expense. So when they lost so cruelly, a nation rejoiced. I met my mate Dave Bell, a mad Evertonian delirious with joy, at Highbury Corner to join a massive spontaneous party where thousands of people really were dancing in the streets.
It’ll never happen again.
