Andrew Lloyd Webber is 67 today. Yes, I thought he was older than that too. I can’t remember a time when he wasn’t famous. From the release of Jesus Christ Superstar in 1970, when he was just 22, he’s enjoyed a career of phenomenal and unbroken success. However, Mr. Byrne, our music teacher was less than impressed. He thought Lloyd Webber was a charlatan and a plagiarist who only got away with it because the tunes that “influenced” his work were long out of copyright. I remember seeing Kit & The Widow doing this little ditty at the Lyric in Hammersmith and thinking that they clearly agreed with Mr. Byrne. Though it cannot be denied that Andrew Lloyd Webber is a genius. As Oscar Wilde famously said, “Talent borrows, genius steals”.
