…and happy birthday to Sir George Martin who celebrates his 90th birthday and 91st new year today. I still don’t think he gets the credit he deserves for making The Beatles the biggest band ever. In two years, they went from “She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah” to this. Impossible without the musical genius and guidance of the classically trained Sir George. Among countless other things, he composed and played the baroque, Bach-like middle-eight which turns this from an ordinary song into an extraordinary piece of music. Two years later, he was even more – if you’ll excuse the word – “instrumental” in the creation of Sgt. Pepper, which changed the course of popular culture. The Beatles simply didn’t possess the musical talent or knowledge to do what they did without George Martin. Which is why they really were John, Paul, George, George and Ringo.
