Not a lot, but I liked him. So I was sad to hear about the death of Paul Daniels yesterday. Not universally adored, he was nonetheless a great entertainer, a phenomenal magician and a huge star. In his 1980s heyday, he famously left his wife for his assistant, Debbie McGee who was twenty years his junior. At the time, his ex-wife gave an interview to one of the tabloids in which she was less than complimentary about him. “I don’t know who this ‘Paul’ is”, she railed, “Paul this… Paul that. He was Ted when I married him and as far as I’m concerned, he still is”. So to celebrate this majestically spiteful remark, here’s a track by another huge star whose real name isn’t Paul.
I liked him.
