I’ve seen three in the past week. The Morris Minor, old-fashioned even when it was new, was bound to become the vehicle of choice for retro beardyman. I had one very briefly when I was about 20 – £200 from an old lady in East Acton. But before I’d got it home, I knew I wouldn’t be keeping it. It was just so painfully slow. Overtaking manoeuvres had to be planned months in advance, so I sold it two days later. But the good thing about a Morris Minor was its mechanical simplicity. The engine was like a Heath Robinson cartoon and, even if you’d never opened a bonnet before, you could see exactly how it all worked. So when Suggsy says he “….changed the oil, the rocker valve and the coil”, he probably did. Though this was no compensation for being burned off by a milk float.
