To Cadogan Hall with my daughter to see David Sedaris. Very funny man but “humourist” is the only word to describe him. He’s not a stand-up comedian. On the contrary, he sits down and simply reads autobiographical stories and anecdotes. They’re funny, sad, wise and true. Just like real life. I’ve been a big fan for years – he writes so beautifully – but it’s so much better when he reads his tales in that whiney, North Caroliney voice of his. Doesn’t sound terribly enthralling, though, does it? A bloke just sitting there reading the story of his life. But this sold-out week at a 1,000 seat venue is proof that it was. And talking of gifted American writers, this was Burt Bacharach & Hal David’s first ever No.1.
The Humourist.
