I’m usually dead against Radio 2’s policy of giving radio shows to celebrities just because they’re famous, but Idris is different. He was a DJ long before was an actor, playing at parties around the West African communities of East London. I worked with him on some Vodafone commercials last year then went to see him later when, amazingly, he was playing at the Love & Liquor on Kilburn High Road. And you could tell at once that this was a bloke who’d served his time slogging around hundreds of unglamorous gigs. He was all about the music, not the technique, and he really knew what worked. I’d highly recommend his African music show on Radio 2. The music’s great, the presenter’s the real deal but best of all, Andy Kershaw must be gutted.
Idris Elba on Radio 2.
