What have they all got in common? Apart from enjoying successful careers on Radio 1, they all went to public school. Yes, even Tongy. This doesn’t make him a bad person. On the contrary. He’s a very nice bloke and he’s got his “head screwed on”. Of course he has. His background and education will have seen to that. Just like the other three, he’s handled his BBC career with shrewdness and aplomb. This week he celebrates 25 years on Radio 1, no doubt playing some great dance tracks. Like this one, released in the 90s on the Ffrr Records (Proprietor: P. Tong). Good luck to him. I have huge admiration for Pete Tong. As I’ve always had for Tony Blackburn, John Peel and Noel Edmonds. But it’s no good saying that public schoolboys are now taking the plum jobs in music and entertainment. Because they always have.
