And there are few things more disgusting to those of us who lean to the left than a horrible, right-wing politician, obsessed with money and power, who pretends to be a socialist. A man who lied, cheated and smear-campaigned his way into parliament. A scheming, joyless creep whose miserable legacy will be the words “No you can’t”. So did I tell him how most Londoners still despise him? Did I upbraid him for squandering millions trying to behave like his self-obsessed hero Hugo Chavez during his abysmal tenure as London Mayor? Did I loudly recite this wonderfully apposite poem in his face? Or because there were fewer items in his basket than mine, did I just smile and let him in front of me?
Ken Livingstone behind me in Waitrose.
