Tony Blackburn announced this from the stage and I thought it was a rather sick joke. We were at the Radio London Soul Night Out at the National Ballroom in Kilburn. A bloke was led on to the stage – dark glasses, braids in his hair – and seated down at a keyboard. That’s when I thought they’d taken the joke too far. This was Kilburn High Road – how could this possibly be one of the greatest stars in the world? And then he went into the unmistakable intro to this and the crowd went nuts. Oh my God, it really was Stevie Wonder playing live at a grotty Irish dancehall at the end of my road. But as my mate Pete said to me, “They’ve probably told him he’s at the Royal Albert Hall”
Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Mr. Stevie Wonder!!”
