I finally got to see The Danish Girl last night, in which Eddie Redmayne has been tipped for an Oscar for his critically acclaimed portrayal of Einar Wegener, one of the world’s first recipients of gender reassignment surgery. It’s a serious and sensitive subject that I was not supposed to find funny. But the moment Eddie was transformed into “Lily”, I could hardly stop laughing. Honestly, there is not a person in the world who’d have mistaken this man for a woman. Any more than they would David Walliams, Dick Emery or Danny La Rue. The fact that the film was so beautifully and sensitively shot only made it funnier. I had to sit outside in the foyer, still chuckling and wait for my wife and daughter. If you were thinking of going to see it, save yourself the trouble. Watch this instead.
Laugh out loud funny.
