Why, whenever The Gap Band’s “Oops Upside Your Head” was played in a club or at a party, did everyone sit on the floor and start pretending to row a boat? Well……because it became mixed up with another track. Backstrokin’ by The Fatback Band came out around the same time and sounded very similar. Because of the title, clubbers would sit on the floor and do “the “backstroke”. But someone somewhere, almost certainly drunk, got it wrong and upon hearing The Gap Band, sat down and started “backstroking”. The Gap Band had much the bigger hit because a craze had taken hold. People sat on the floor for “Oops Upside Your Head” even though it made absolutely no sense to do so. They just followed the crowd. And you wonder how the Nazis got started.
One of life’s great mysteries solved.
