I love chocolate more than almost anyone I know.

But only the good stuff. I have no interest in Cadbury’s or Galaxy. Green & Black’s is the minimum standard and Ameila Rope or Paul A Young if I can get it. I’m not shy about spending good money on good chocolate but even I now think the world’s gone mad. A shop called Mast Brothers has opened in Redchurch Street, until recently one of the roughest parts of the East End. More like an art gallery, it’s a shrine to the no doubt exquisite chocolate hand-made on the premises. I wandered in and gazed wide-eyed at their “artisan bars” in all their exotic varieties. Then something snapped me back into reality. A small bar was £8. Eight quid! That’s not just absurd, that’s obscene. And two thoughts crossed my mind: There are children starving in this world. And Ronnie and Reggie must be turning in their graves.
