I was a late convert to his Sunday night show on Radio 2 but made sure I caught the last one a few weeks ago because I had a feeling we would never hear him broadcast again. He played the standards – Frank, Dean, Nat, Ella and complemented the songs with gentle anecdotes about those who’d sung them because, of course, he’d known them all. His urbane style and compendious knowledge of music will be sadly missed. When he introduced me to this, I thought it was the most lyrically brilliant song I had ever heard. I still do. So rappers, take note: This is how you do it.
