I loved the whole album. In 1984, we all did. Sade’s Diamond Life seemed the acme of smooth sophistication. More than any other album, it signalled the UK shaking off the shackles of the seventies. Diamond Life sold millions and made Sade Adu, the band’s singer (Sade was always the name of the band) an instant star. That was her peak. We’ve heard barely a note of note from her in 33 years. And yet, my friend Brian tells me, she’s now Sade Adu CBE, ennobled in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. A CBE? That’s a hell of a gong, just one below a Damehood but why? And why now? Cynics are suggesting that, because Sade is half-Nigerian, it’s an attempt to make the honours system more “diverse”. I do hope not. To patronise an artist in this way would be Sade without the e.
